The checklist for your ski holiday

Whether you head to the mountains every year or you’re hitting the slopes for the first time, our checklist offers tips on what to wear, the gear you need and how to protect yourself if anything goes wrong during your trip. Use it for greater peace of mind so that you can enjoy your holiday to the fullest. Have fun!

In your suitcase

Hitting the snowy slopes means warm clothes are a must. Be sure to make room in your suitcase for:

  • Ski trousers
  • Ski jacket
  • Thermal clothing
  • Ski boots
  • Hat
  • Gloves
  • Ski goggles

Ski gear

Hiring or buying: The advantage of hiring gear when you arrive is that it's easier to change if there's a problem. You also don't have to drag it all the way there and back. That said, bringing ski gear from Belgium is often cheaper. If you ski every year, it might be wise to purchase your own gear.

Safety first: In many ski resorts, it is mandatory for children to wear ski helmets, and it’s a good idea for you to wear one too.

Maintenance: Waxing your skis or snowboard and sharpening the edges will help you glide across the snow more smoothly. If you require a few minor repairs, take your gear to a specialist. Avoid stress by booking your maintenance nice and early.

Check before you leave

Your skiing lesson reservation: If you’re going skiing for the first time, don't forget to book lessons in advance and take proof of your reservation with you just to be safe.

A first-aid kit: Lines can be long for the pharmacy in a busy ski resort. Avoid the wait by preparing a first-aid kit ahead of time with bruise cream, cold packs and sun lotion.

Winter tyres and chains: If you’re travelling by car, make sure your vehicle is ready for slippery and snowy roads. In Germany, France and Austria, winter tyres are compulsory in winter conditions, so be sure to arrange an appointment at the garage in good time.

National rules: Since January 2022, you must have a certificate with you proving you hold family insurance when you go skiing or snowboarding in Italy. If you don’t have this, you could receive a fine and have your ski pass confiscated. This requirement does not apply to cross-country skiing.
Before you leave, be sure to check the local rules wherever you’re going to ski.
