The different insulation options for your home

Roof insulation

If your home is losing a lot of heat, insulating your roof is a good idea as it’s where up to 30% of that heat is lost.

If you have a sloping roof, you should place insulation between the rafters. A flat roof should be insulated along the underside or between the different layers of the roof. You can also choose to insulate just the floor of your attic. This allows you to keep the heat in your living spaces without fully insulating your roof.

Wall insulation

If heat is escaping through your walls, it’s a smart move to insulate them. Doing so means your rooms require less heating and you save on your energy bill.

Cavity wall insulation involves filling the cavity between your inner and outer walls with insulating material, creating an additional thermal layer. Exterior wall insulation is fitted along the outside walls, which means you can also use it to change your property’s appearance.

Floor insulation

If you have a cellar, you can install cellar ceiling insulation. This retains heat more effectively and means you don’t have to walk on a cold floor.

This insulation is easy to install and does not require major renovation work. The insulation material is placed against the ceiling in your cellar so you don't need to pull up your floor.

FAQs

If you’re tired of your home losing heat, getting it properly insulated is a smart idea. There are several ways you can stop heat escaping your home. We’ve summarised them for you:

  • Insulation for your flat or sloping roof
  • Attic floor insulation
  • Cavity wall insulation
  • Exterior wall insulation
  • Floor insulation (specifically cellar ceiling insulation)

Insulating your home has many advantages. Not only do you save on your energy bills because your home requires less heating, insulation also has an impact on noise pollution. Certain types of insulation absorb sound and reduce echoes.

In addition, insulation also improves your home’s energy rating, helping to increase its value. If you’re planning to sell your home one day, it’s worth knowing that many buyers look for a property that has been properly insulated.

Lastly, insulation is not only good for your energy bill, but also for the environment. By using less gas to heat your home, your boiler produces less CO2 and other types of waste gases.

It’s difficult to calculate how much energy you’ll save due to various factors such as the area to be insulated, the type of insulation material and the thickness of your insulation.
A typical home could reduce its energy consumption by up to 40% with proper insulation:

  • Cavity wall insulation: 10% to 25% less energy consumed
  • Exterior wall insulation: 20% to 40% less energy consumed
  • Roof insulation: 20% to 30% less energy consumed
  • Floor insulation: 10% to 15% less energy consumed

‘Impact us today’ is one of KBC Brussels’s partners. They have a network of contractors you can rely on to carry out sustainable renovations. That means ‘Impact us today’ doesn’t actually carry out the works, rather they put you in touch with a reliable contractor.

You’re under no obligation to do so. Once you’ve submitted your request in KBC Brussels Mobile, ‘Impact us today’ will contact you within five business days to arrange an appointment. The contractor will then visit you to assess the situation and prepare a no-obligation quote.

After energy-efficient renovation work has been carried out, it might be a good idea to apply for a new EPC. This may be necessary, for example, if you want to apply for an EPC-label grant or if you want to sell your home.

Tip: you can apply for your EPC with just a few taps in KBC Brussels Mobile. If you require other certificates or proof of inspections, you can also use KBC Brussels Mobile to make arrangements for obtaining an asbestos certificate, electrical inspection report or a heating oil tank inspection report, all in one go. This service is provided by our partner ‘De Immowinkel’.

Insulating your home will save money on your energy bills, but it’s still a significant outlay to begin with. You can apply for an energy loan at KBC Brussels to finance your project. Find out more.
