Living and working in Brussels is great. There’s so much to do in our warm, vibrant and multicultural capital. But there’s a lot you need to know, as well. It’s not always easy to keep up with this constantly buzzing city. To help you, KBC Brussels is sharing its top ten apps, which everyone in Brussels ought to have on their smartphone.
Give your phone a Brussels accent
Every big city has its quirks, its special characteristics, its strengths and its drawbacks. Not to mention its well-kept secrets and mysteries calling out to be solved. Here at KBC Brussels, we have our finger on the capital’s pulse, and we’d really like to share our experience of the city with you. Here are ten apps that will make you a real Brussels ‘Ket’.
The Brussels Top Ten? ‘Non peut-être!’ (trans. ‘You bet!’)
1. Poppy: getting around Brussels by car
The hardest thing in Brussels isn’t so much driving as parking. Poppy offers a fleet of eco-friendly shared cars, available all over the city, for a fixed price per minute, everything included: transport, insurance, fuel... and parking! Besides cars, Poppy also offers electric bikes and stand-up scooters.
2. BePark: find a car park in the city
Rather use your own car? Parking in Brussels can be a headache. All the same, there are more free spaces than you might think. You just have to know where they are. That’s where BePark comes in: the app tells you what spaces are available in Brussels car parks.
3. STIB Mobile: bus, tram and metro timetables and stops
Make public transport easier. The STIB Mobile app offers real-time access to timetables and tells you how long you will have to wait. The GPS feature also guides you to the nearest stop and helps you plan your journey.
4. BrusselsGardens: discover green Brussels
Did you know that Brussels boasts over 8 000 hectares of parks and forests, making it the greenest capital in Europe? The Soignes Forest accounts for a lot of that, but there are plenty of parks, squares full of flowers and gardens in the city too. Find them on the BrusselsGardens website (French or Dutch). And if you want to know the air quality, download their Brussels Air app.
5. Formyfit: give your running shoes a Brussels workout
This is the app you need to train for the famous and popular Brussels 20km. Developed by a Belgian running enthusiast, Formyfit helps you discover the right pace to start and progress. It also assesses your form to predict your progress. With this app, all you have to do is run!
6. TheFork: dinner is served!
Eating is a serious matter in Brussels. It’s not just a necessity, it’s virtually a religion. TheFork app classifies the capital’s restaurants by type and popularity, lets you make reservations and offers discounts in the shape of ‘Yums’.
7. Payconiq: your smartphone is rich
Ever asked for the bill, only to realise you forgot your wallet? Or perhaps you’re out of cash and you fancy a portion of French fries? The solution is your smartphone and the Payconiq app. It’s the easiest way to pay without a card or cash. Another handy feature is that you can load your loyalty cards too.Â
8. AllBikesNow: bikes can be faster in Brussels than cars
The AllBikesNow app locates all the places for you in real time where you can pick up or drop off a bike with this shared service. The system in Brussels is called ‘Villo’, but the app also includes 28 providers in other towns. There’s no better way to keep in shape while exploring the city.
9. Recycle! All you need to know about your garbage in Brussels
Is it the white bag you need to put out today? Or the yellow, blue, orange or green one? It’s a question people in Brussels ask all the time. The Recycle! app has all the answers. It tells you all the collection days in your street and tells you where the collection points are in your neighbourhood.
