Is the existing cavity wall insulation sufficient?
Not every cavity will be filled with insulation material. Is the filling of cavities required by law? And what if the cavity is already completely or partially filled, can you assume that you don’t need to do anything? Read on and find out.
If you have a cavity without insulation material, it would be best to have it insulated. There is currently no legal requirement to insulate walls of existing residential real estate. For new construction or a new annex, the U value of the exterior walls must be 0.24 W/(m2K) or less.
If the cavity is already insulated, the insulation material might be worn, sagging, pulverised or eroded by moisture and mould. If that is the case, you can have the insulation material repaired or replaced. If the quality of the material has diminished or its insulating value is much lower than the current generation of insulation materials, you could consider having new material added to the cavity.
You need a specialist company to assess the condition of the existing cavity wall insulation. They can also assess whether it is possible to replace or supplement the insulation material and how this can be done.
